Abstract

Biophilic design is a significant ecological paradigm that contributes to sustainability by strengthening the human–nature relationship. However, the limited biophilic value observed in human–nature–space interactions may result from designers’ misinterpretation of the concept. As Kellert, one of the founders of the biophilic design paradigm, emphasized, biophilic design is not simply the addition of trees, plants, or natural décor to spaces. Although previous studies have investigated biophilic environments using virtual reality, they have primarily focused on their cognitive, neurocognitive, and wellness effects. This study re-examines the biophilic design paradigm by exploring Modernism's approaches to establishing connections between nature and architecture. Le Corbusier's proposals provide a key theoretical framework, emphasizing the understanding, interpretation, and abstraction of nature's laws rather than their direct imitation. The study investigates how these concepts correspond with specific parameters of biophilic design and how biophilic value can be enhanced through architecture. It proposes that integrating elements of biophilic design models with architectural paradigms can support a more comprehensive and accurate approach to biophilic design and ultimately enhance its value within architectural practice.
